About film
This is the first Latvian film about the Holocaust and events of the German occupation. This is a story of Zanis Lipke, the Righteous Gentile. During the day he worked at the Luftwaffe warehouses, and at nights he became a smuggler. When the Nazi soldiers began murdering the citizens of Riga, he decided to take a desperate, mad, and very dangerous step. He led more than fifty men out of the ghetto right before the German guards’ eyes. Zanis created a refuge for them in his own house. What was the secret of Zanis Lipke’s selflessness: was it his thrill for adventure, his stubbornness, or simply his ability to act upon human instincts in inhuman conditions?
