The film tells about the religious and secular life of Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger (1926–2007), Archbishop of Paris (1981–2005). Lustiger’s story is unique: the high-ranking Catholic priest of Jewish Heritage was bound to become a complex historical figure.

Over time, Ilan concentrating on making feature films, while returning back to literary work in-between. He created Les amants du Flore, a film about student years of the writer Jean-Paul Sartre. Cohen released five novels, and his third feature film Les Petits-Fils won a first prize at the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival.
