Opening film of 5th MJFF

The opening film of the Moscow Jewish Film Festival is announced.

The 5th MJFF will open with Shawn Snyder's film «To Dust» starring Géza Röhrig and Matthew Broderick. The film will also take part in the main competition program of the Festival. It is a story of Shmuel, a Hasidic Jew who lives in upstate New-York, and whose wife suddenly passed away.

Unable to let go of her memory and move on, he starts exploring the question of decomposition of a body in a grave with the help of a science professor (Matthew Broderick).

Shawn Snyder (this is the first feature film of the American director) is not exactly reverential when he creates an image of a person tortured by his loss. He films a story about the unexpected friendship of the professor and the Hasidic Jew, which somehow also involves living and dead pigs, with quite obvious references to some of the films by the Cohen brothers ( to «A Serious Man» in particular).
