Ruggero Gabbai

Ruggero Gabbai is an Italian director and photographer specializing in documentaries about the Holocaust, social memory, and human rights. Born in Antwerp and raised in Milan, he studied in New York at Columbia University, where he worked under the guidance of masters such as Miloš Forman and Martin Scorsese. His filmography includes more than thirty documentaries, including the acclaimed Memoria (1997) about Italian prisoners of the Auschwitz death camp. His other notable works include Io ricordo (about the victims of mafia), Libya: l’ultimo esodo (on the disappearance of the Jewish community of Tripoli), and Kinderblock (about the children subjected to Dr. Mengele's experiments). His films have been screened on numerous occasions at the Yad Vashem memorial, the Jewish Museum of New York, and broadcast on channels such as RAI and Sky Arte.
