About film
Leyba (Doru Bеm) lives with his wife Sura and their son Eli in a Romanian village. In the late 19th century, this Jewish family runs a village inn, a hub for travelers. The village population is predominantly Orthodox Romanian, but Roma, Turks, and Tatars also live there. A class conflict emerges in the community, worsened by religious tensions. The tension reaches its peak during Holy Week, leading up to Orthodox Easter. The family’s servant, Gheorghe (Ciprian Kerkeș) – a drunkard with a dubious past – threatens Leyba’s family after being dismissed. Growing anxieties about the inn and his loved ones – his pregnant wife Sura, who has been assaulted, his son, and the indifference of the authorities – gradually transform Leyba’s fear into obsession.
