About film
In Orthodox Judaism, the final step in the conversion process is immersion in a sacred pool for ritual cleansing, known as a mikvah. Maria, who is considering converting to Judaism, is prepared to undergo this important ritual, but one of the rabbis overseeing the ceremony behaves in an inappropriate manner and refuses to acknowledge her immersion as valid, despite Maria's confidence that she has performed the ritual correctly and the rabbi's apparent desire to observe her immersion in the water. The film raises questions about the formal requirements of religious tradition and the personal faith that resides within each individual.
