About film
Based on real events, the film tells the story of Edoardo Mortara, a boy who lived happily with his Jewish family in Bologna. After his birth, he was secretly baptized and now he is under the care of the Catholic Church. His parents do everything they can to bring him back, but the Pope intervenes and uses the situation to strengthen his authority. Edoardo faces a difficult choice between Judaism and Catholicism, and the story will affect not only him but also his Jewish family and the new religious community led by the Pope.

Marco Bellocchio is an Italian director, screenwriter, and actor who began his career by making short films. His first feature-length film, «I pugni in tasca» (1965), was selected for the Locarno International Film Festival. Through his subsequent films such as «China Is Near» (1967) and «In the Name of the Father» (1971), Belocchio continued to explore anti-conformity and revolutionary ideas. In 1991, he received a special jury award the Silver Bear for his film «The Conviction» at the Berlin Film Festival. In his more recent films, such as «La balia» (1999) and «Dormant Beauty» (2012), Bellocchio often looks back at the past and present of Italy. His criticism of institutions of power remains constant: he criticizes the army, political parties, schools, the state, its laws, the church, and the family.
