About film
Lydia Morozov's autobiographical film is a series of domestic vignettes from the lives of four women (grandmother, mother, and two daughters, one of whom is the director herself) who repatriated from Russia to Israel. The film portrays how their lives unfold many years later, what they dreamt of when immigrating to an unfamiliar country, and how well their expectations matched reality. While watching, there's a constant anticipation of a significant plot twist, yet nothing substantial happens. This mirrors the sentiments of the older generation of heroines: once they were singing, but afterwards, they seem to have become frozen in their fantasies of a better life, not quite succeeding in realizing them.
Director
Lydia Morozov is an Israeli director of Russian origin. She emigrated with her parents to Tel Aviv in 1992, where she received her film education at the Minshar School of Arts. We Used To Sing is Morozov's student project, which has received several awards in categories for young directors.
