About film
This film feels either like a joke or a very odd prophecy. A parishioner’s wife involuntarily witnesses an old rebbe’s death and suddenly starts growing a beard and speaking in the deep male voice. Everyone is outraged and mesmerized: on the one hand, this could not have happened because it is not a thing that happens, but it is also how aesthetically their favourite rebbe got reborn to continue to carry his wisdom. The film’s ending won’t provide any coherent explanation, which makes it even more curious.

Director
Emily Cheeger is an American director, screenwriter, composer, and, in her own words, a “traveller between the worlds.” She studied music and multimedia arts at Yale and is now in her 4th year studying filmmaking at NYU. She filmed and released the comedy Holy Woman as part of her studies, and the film was screened at Jewish film festivals in New York, Toronto, Miami, and other cities. The film clearly showcases the director’s black humour and her respect for the Jewish culture. Besides filmmaking, Cheeger is passionate about design and invests a lot of time in growing in that direction as well.
