About film
Why more and more people in today’s world are fascinated by Hitler and Nazism, normalise Antisemitism in the mass culture and turn historical studies into an ideological weapon? The Meaning of Hitler was shot in nine countries, where its creators traced Hitler’s movements, investigated rare archival materials, and studied the phenomenon of his rise to power. The film deconstructs myths and misconceptions about the past and illustrates the complex process of coming to terms with it in the strangest of moments — in the present.

Director
Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker are a husband-and-wife team of documentary filmmakers. They met in New York in 1994 and formed a creative tandem. Their works, which were screened at the TIFF and other international film festivals, don’t shy away from uncomfortable questions, whether directed at the audiences of themselves. For instance, Epperlein was born in Eastern Germany — and, together with her husband, she explores the theme of acceptance of the German past and collective guilt in Karl Marx City and their latest release, The Meaning of Hitler.
