About film
Birdie is a Black and Jewish daughter of the divorced parents in a biracial family, raised by her mom in a New Jersey suburb. While she is studying an excerpt from the Torah by heart for her upcoming Bar Mitzvah, Donna Summer’s Bad Girls is playing in her head. That is a poignant example of how two cultures get intertwined in this young woman. Birdie spends a visitation day with her father, and talks to him about divorce, hair straighteners, fake handbags – and searches for her own personality. This is a stylish debut indie film about the unexpected meeting of age-long traditions was part of the Berlinale 2020.
