About film
It Takes A Family is a complex (even if it is only 50 minutes long) personal, and extremely honest documentary, a memoir about a family, its secrets, and its forcefully repressed memories. Susanne Kovács – the film’s director and narrator – knows that her paternal grandparents survived the Holocaust and fled to Denmark to begin a new life. They managed to rise. For all family members, their past and their painful experiences remain a mystery, which has a huge impact on the relationships within the family. They hoped that if no one sees the darkness inside their souls, then normality could be possible. It Takes A Family resembles a screen adaptation of a family photo album, where everyone is smiling and is staying silent about the past, hoping to forget it. But if you stay silent about your past, it might darken the present. Susanne Kovács tries to walk a hard path – to learn new things about her family, to come closer to what they were once forced to live through. But she will also have to answer questions she’s asking: is it allowed to dig so deeply into family history and release its ghosts? And could it be that everyone has their own truth?
