About film
An incredible and deeply moving film about the Holocaust and World War II. This is a paradoxical comedy-drama about a child’s perception of the monstrous catastrophe which was quietly taking place, often unnoticed by the population of Hitler’s Germany. This picture rediscovers the canons of Shoah’s portrayals on film. The title character of the film is a German boy Jojo (played by Roman Griffin Davis, who was 12 when the film came out and received the Golden Globe nomination), who is a Hitler sympathizer because of his young age and propaganda. His wonderful mother (Scarlett Johansson) is forced to raise the boy all alone after her husband left for war and her older daughter died of flu. Meanwhile, JoJo discovers that a teenage Jewish girl Elsa Korr (Thomasin McKenzie) hides inside one of their walls. The film also stars Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, and Alfie Allen. JoJo’s imaginary friend, a fanciful version of Adolf Hitler that “helps” the boy with the mischievous advice, is played by the director Taika Waititi himself.
