About film
Postmodern director Quentin Tarantino realizes the dream of the Israeli state about a nation that can protect itself from any Reich, and in his seventh film he tells a story of the Basterds squad that consists of Jewish-American soldiers with almost superheroic powers (played by Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, Til Schweiger and others, who, following the director’s lead, pretend to be dumb throughout the entire film). The author exaggerates everything in a rather comical manner: Nazi soldiers are almost cartoonish supervillains (including Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar for that role), French Resistance against the occupation resembles a Bondiana-style spy movie with femmes fatales (such as Shosanna played by Mélanie Laurent) and unexpected plot turns (the opening scene is one of the most striking examples). Besides, Inglourious Basterds is one of the most stunning examples of alternate history in film. Tarantino makes a childhood dream come true - he travels back to the past and with a single gunshot rescues the world from the Holocaust. The very similar method was also used in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino’s latest film that was presented at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
