The majority of actors in this film are not professionals, and the script was specially translated into Yiddish. Menashe, a grocery store clerk, loses his wife Leah. According to tradition a widower cannot bring up a son on his own, but a Rabbi lets this devastated father spend one week with his child, so that Menashe could prove himself a suitable man of faith and fatherhood.
