About event
The leading role of Abraham Schwartz was initially a graduation work of Vladimir Mashkov at the workshop of Oleg Tabakov at the Moscow Art Theatre School. Tabakov later said: “Volodya entered both life and theatre knowing the darker sides of life and theatre alike. He had a rough start, was expelled from school, kept coming back. But the furious desire to do work that was truly his overcame it all … When he was playing the old Abraham Schwartz in Galych's play, it became clear that the Actor was born ...”
It was later decided to screen the play. "Matrosskaya Tishina" was supposed to be its name, but then Vladimir Mashkov, director and lead actor, changed it to “Papa”. Today this decision resonates with special symbolism. But in 2004 Mashkov explained it by saying it reflected the soul of the film better: that children often realize the role that their parents had played in their lives only too late. Vladimir Mashkov will talk about this and many others ideas right after the film screening.
